The hip-hop culture is about twenty years old. Yes, it is more like a culture. Hip Hop is just not music it is far more than just music, lyrics and videos. There are many people, who even today think that hip-hop is just something about a Rap producers and artist.
The Hip-hop dance basically originated in New York by some young African-American and Hispanic men during the period of late 1960s, it was originated as part of the hip-hop culture of graffiti art, rap and scratch music. The hip-hop dance always keeps changing but it is essentially embraced by two different styles one is of break dance and another is body popping. The break dance you can say is a form of athletic solo in which the dancer or the performer enters in to the dance arena in a sideways motion and then breaks or dives to the floor, then spins around on his shoulders, head or buttocks and ends up with a freeze position. Body popping whereas involves a series of very fast, sharp actions those travel all through the body much in a way as robotic-looking alternations of moves and then freeze. The hip-hop dance and hip-hop music became internationally popular since late 1970s and now, it is often incorporated into theatre dance. You can follow the lead’s latest info.
The main aspect of hip hop music and dancing that makes the style would be the passion for dancing as well as expressing your emotions. It is always good to have some kind of skills like technique only thing is the way you can develop the movements is just by believing in yourself and also feeling those emotions and at the same time have fun and feel the beats as well.
Hip hop is considered as a musical genre which is developed as part of the hip hop culture, and it is defined by some key stylistic components like rapping, scratching DJing, sampling, beat boxing etc. Rapping which is also referred to as MCing or even emceeing it is basically a vocal style where in the artist speaks or sings lyrically, in rhyme and in verse, usually to synthesized beat or an instrumental beats. Beats are always of about 4/4 time signature, and looping different portions of various other songs, usually done by a DJ, can form them or the producer samples it from portions of some songs. Today’s modern beats mostly incorporate drum machines, synthesizers as well as live bands. Rappers write, improvise or memorize their lyrics and perform to a beat.
The differences of Hip Hop Dancers and Poppers ( or Funk Stylists as a select few prefer ) is profound, primarily because of the world the 2 styles originate from, many people consider them 1 in the same in regards to how each dancer whether Hip Hop or Popper evolves within the dance but in actuality I feel thats not entire an accurate train of though. In many circumstances their differences lie in their acquisition of skill. Both spend time practicing, both can spend time learning from a more senior peer. One profound difference in how these teachings are used comes from the world the 2 respective styles reside in.
Hip hop dancers spend more time choreographing and learning moves from whoever their respective teacher may be and these moves usually translate into their own styles almost as a mirror image, this is of no fault to the dancer but to the teachers who push a “right” and “wrong” attribute on their students. By creating a right/wrong environment (in regards to creativity not foundation) it restrains the practitioners own creativity and forces them to follow their teachers moves exactly. In many ways performances and group shows makes this aspect a requirement but in general learning and self development it is a hindrance that often gets swept under the rug in many dance schools.
Poppers, though they can have teachers and also generally teach themselves are in a world where copying of any sort is greatly frowned upon and thus they’re ability to create and grow into a unique dancer is more readily available to them. This in no way means hip hop dancers are incapable of dancing freely of their own created moves because there are many “general” dancers capable of this but the environment they grow in slows this process down. But in contrast poppers seem to have a harder time following choreography that isn’t directly related to funky styles and thus their drawback is being incapable of learning pre-taught dance motions as “quickly” as a general dancers/hip hop dancers.
Even in the example video its clear he (Nuko) is dancing purely on his own knowledge, style and skill level. It’s free and in no way looks “pre-created” which is common for poppers like him, regardless of their skill level. Again, this isn’t to say its impossible for hip hop dancers but I find that even watching the best hip hop dancers dance free of a group, they do moves similar to what other dancers do showing that their own creativity is still being guarded by moves taught in a right/wrong environment. This is why its troubling when hip hop teachers who really have little to no foundation of what funk styles really
is claim they are teaching popping because 9 times out of 10 they are teaching it incorrectly in regards to the foundation of the dance itself, And of course the contrasts ensure a balance of one not being primarily better than the other, the disadvantages of both Hip Hop and Popping whether it be originality, choreography etc can easily be overcome, its up to the dancer to determine what they like and the type of environment they want to be in, myself along with many other have grown fond of watching poppers/Funk Stylists because of that free nature they have with their various styles within Funk, but I do like the occasional hip hop performance but, For me, personally that’s where the line is drawn. I like watching poppers singularly “and” in groups.. But only tend to like watching hip hop dancers in groups only because that’s where I see more differences in styles and creativity. But again, to each his own.
On an equivalent day that Broadway went dark thanks to virus concerns, the show went on for Wicked in Madison, Wisconsin. I received the Overture curious to ascertain what percentage people came out for one among Broadway’s most beloved shows. While there was a clear smattering of empty seats throughout the house, it seems most theatre lovers were present.
As the curtain rose, and before I used to be swept up within the experience of Wicked, I took a flash to wonder how it felt for the cast and crew to be performing when their Broadway relations were on a sudden hiatus, and the way long would they continue their run? It seems, not long. It had been their final performance for the foreseeable future.
WICKED maybe a beloved Broadway favorite permanent reason. Its large-scale production at its best with a gifted cast, award-winning costumes, and magical sets, unlike anything you’ve seen. The sweeping score is catchy and memorable. I’ve seen Wicked repeatedly by purchasing online Wicked broadway tickets and since its debut over sixteen years ago and was surprised at how current this show is with its tale of discrimination, politics, taking a stand, and enduring friendship.
As Glinda, played by Allison Bailey, floated on stage via bubble, I found her voice and delivery refreshing. Certainly, she played the oft ditzy Glinda well, but she also showed a more realistic side of Glinda where her voice wasn’t always high-pitched and saccharin–but clear and authentic.
When Elphaba, played by Talia, made her entrance as a replacement student at Shiz, I used to be struck by her comedic-timing and casually sarcastic portrayal of the green witch. Her delightful approach jogged my memory of Fleabag writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, which may be an excellent thing.
Kudos to the talented cast for taking the audience on an incredible journey of magic and make before we all returned home to more dire news of a world pandemic, social distancing and theatre and humanity closures across the country.
Having recently celebrated its 16th anniversary on Broadway, WICKED is that the winner of over 100 international awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards. WICKED has been performed Tickets4Chicago reported that in over 100 cities in 16 countries around the world (U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, and China) and has so far been translated into six languages: Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese. WICKED has amassed over $4.8 billion in global sales and has been seen by nearly 60 million people worldwide.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The assembly is directed by Tony Award winner Joe Montello with musical staging by Tony Award-winner Wayne Cilento. WICKED is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Stage Productions, The Areca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Hip hop became part of modern culture during the ’80s and over the years, it has become a lifestyle for many. Based on unique new art forms that developed in the streets because of a need for self expression, it is commonly known to contain four elements: DJ-ing, MC-ing (rapping), Graffiti and B-Boying. This article is going to look specifically look at hip hop culture in music.
Briefly, hip hop music is defined by four key stylistic elements: Rapping/MC-ing, DJ-ing/Scratching, Sampling (or Synthesis), and Beat boxing.
Rapping, as it is commonly known, is also referred to as emceeing, MC-ing, spitting bars, or rhyming. Historically, it is believed that rapping is a form of expression embedded within ancient African culture and oral tradition.
Today, rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music and reggae. This style of music can be broken down into different components, namely: content, flow and delivery.
Content refers to the lyrics or words spoken by the rapper. Rappers usually talk about the world’s current events in their content. Some even use rap to satirize or criticize some of the things happening in society.
The flow of the rap refers the rhythms and rhymes of a hip hop song’s lyrics and how they interact. Flow can be broken down into rhyme, rhyme schemes, and rhythm (also known as cadence). Sometimes, flow is also used to refer to elements such as pitch, timbre, volume.
Delivery refers to the execution or performance of the rap. When preparing to deliver or perform a rap routine, a rapper must develop vocal presence, enunciation, and breath control. Vocal presence is the uniqueness of a rapper’s voice on record. Enunciation affects the flow of rap – some rappers choose also to exaggerate their enunciation for comic and artistic effect. Breath control involves taking in air without interrupting the rap delivery. This is essential in any delivery because with poor breath control, one cannot deliver difficult verses without making unintentional pauses in between hip hop dance songs.
DJ-ing involves the use of turntablism, an art of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables and a DJ mixer.
Among the first few hip hop DJ’s was Kool DJ Herc. Kool Herc created break-beat DJ-ing which became the foundational development of DJ-ing in hip hop history. This type of DJ-ing involves the isolation of breaks in songs. A break is a musical fragment only seconds in length in which all or most of the music stops except for the percussion.
Besides Herc’s techniques, DJs Grandmaster Flowers, Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, and Grandmaster Caz also made further innovations with the introduction of scratching.
Sampling involves taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece. While sampling, producers will physically manipulate tape loops or vinyl records on a phonograph.
Sampling in hip hop dance songs first emerged with Kool Herc, contemporary disc jockeys and imitators creating rhythmic beats by looping breaks on two turntables.
Over time, sampling technology has become more advanced, modern equipment allowed not only more memory but more flexibility for creative production. Producers were able to filter and layer different hits, re-sequence them into a single piece.
Unfortunately, with the emergence of new and hi-tech equipment, it may prove to be very expensive to keep up with the technology causing a decrease in the quality of the album.
Beat boxing is a unique form of music style that do not use any kind of instrument or electronic equipment to produce. It is the vocal percussion of hip hop culture involving the production drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds using the human mouth, lips, tongue, and voice. Specifically, this is done through singing, vocal imitation of turntablism, and the simulation of horns, strings, and other musical instruments.
Hip-hop isn’t just about music. Hip-hop is about dance, art, expression, pain, love, racism, sexism, broken families, hard times, overcoming adversity and the search for God. It’s a culture, a way of life, a language, a fashion, a set of values, and a unique perspective. Hip-hop is about trying to live out the American dream from the bottom up.
Hip-Hop culture is a unique phenomenon because it does incorporate and affect so many different cultures, ages and classes. In the early 1970’s the unnamed culture known today as “hip-hop” was forming in New York City’s ghettos. Each element in this culture had its own history and terminology contributing to the development of a cultural movement. The culture was identified in the early 1980’s when DJ Afrika Bambaataa named the dynamic urban movement, “hip-hop.” Since that time “hip-hop” has served as a powerful voice and form of expression for young black audiences and has evolved into a culture with its own language, style of dress and mindset. The hip hop culture envelops not only music but also fashion and dance.
What makes hip hop’s evolution is the range of flavor the culture has to offer and what “hip-hop heads” thrive on is individuality and creativity, which is never more apparent than in hip-hop fashion. In fact, hip hop fashion is one of the top clothing industries in the world today. It is claimed to have begun in the African American community but has spread quickly into being a truly universal style for people of all ethnicities and sexes and a lynch pin of hip hop culture. Hip hop fashion is preferred by various celebrities such as 50 cent, Puff Daddy, Ja Rule and Sean Combs. It is often satirized by comedians such as Ali G. Hip hop fashion is a visible element of hip hop culture.
Hip hop dancing is evolving in many different directions today, heavily influenced by the evolution of hip hop music and its popularity in media, surrounded by heated debates on history and authenticity. Modern hip hop music gave birth to new styles of hip hop dancing partly inspired by the old school styles. Most of those styles focused on upright dancing as opposed to breakdance which is better known for its floor-oriented movements. To express one’s creative talent, hip-hop dancing is perhaps the best way in which impressions and expressions come from the soul.
Music has always played a key role in shaping minds and attitudes. Hip hop music sheds light on contemporary politics, history and race. The social influence hip hop music has on the hip hop cultural movement includes activities of dancing, associated slang, fashion and other elements. Hip hop music encompasses the written word, visual art, dance and rhythmic style with intricate beats. Music has no boundaries and no limits; anything worthy should be available through music, especially spirituality and religion. A big influence on the hip hop identity is its redeeming music.
Culture is the product of a current reality. The identity of a culture is created by the work and thought of human beings. It is the expression of a class or element of a particular class and is reflective of a certain period. The allure of Hip Hop culture as an organizing mechanism has arisen primarily because there is no existing political apparatus that adequately addresses the needs of young people and/or poor and working class communities; in a political vacuum. Culture, as a general matter, cuts to the core of how people articulate their beliefs, values and customs. Hip Hop culture is the most visible and vocal representative entity of its own identity.
