Remy Ma letter from prison

In a letter from prison Remy Ma expresses her thoughts on life behind bars:
“I rarely listen to the radio because it’s sort of depressing,” Remy wrote in a letter.
“Not being able to record is stressful not because I’m a rapper but because that was my way of venting and expressing myself. So I write a lot! So much that now I have a callous on my finger from holding a pen.
Not being able to go somewhere when you want, see your family when you want (on many occasions when you need to), can’t use the phone, take a shower, wear clothes, or even eat when you want – super aggravating.
Whenever, which is almost everyday I get visits, a lot of kids ask for autographs. It’s something that I used to do almost everyday but now it actually feels weird, I really feel like an inmate.
Everyone in prison isn’t innocent but everyone in prison isn’t guilty. So whether you end up here on purpose or by accident, the pain you’re feeling is still the same. And I can quote a lot ‘gangsters’ by saying that ‘I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.”
Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison last May after tearfully apologizing to Makeda Barnes-Joseph, a former friend she shot because of a beef over money.
We reported late last year Remy Ma was appealing her sentence however we’ve not heard more about the success of her appeal. Let us know if you’ve got additional info.

Remy Ma appealing 8 year sentence

Remy Ma’s parole date is in September of 2014, but according to a new appeal filed earlier this week, her lawyers are hoping to have her out much sooner.
After a lengthy courtroom battle, stemming from a shooting over a year ago, Remy Ma’s legal team has found new information that could overturn her March conviction for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph.
Court documents state Remy’s legal team believe the trial regarding the incident which resulted in Barnes-Joseph being shot in the stomach, was handled incorrectly. Remy Ma (born Reminisce Smith) was subsequently sentenced to eight years for charges of assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion.
Remy’s lawyers claim that the jury, over their objection, was manipulated, and if Barnes-Joseph “was truthful and accurate” then her testimony “under the law satisfies the proof beyond a reasonable doubt.” Remy’s legal team also alleges their client was denied a fair trial on the grounds that they weren’t allowed to argue that Barnes-Joseph was shot during a struggle for a gun.
The appeal goes on to explain that the numerous misjudgments of the court resulted in a “directed verdict,” which they say should be examined as more than just accidental error.
Remy’s lawyers also argue that including unrelated evidence, such as other incidents at the Player’s Club in New York City and tying her to gang members, “likely colored the jury’s consideration of the remaining counts.”
Remy is currently serving her sentence at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Westchester County, New York.

Remy Ma sentenced to 8 years

This morning, incarcerated rapper Remy Ma was sentenced to 8 years in Manhattan Criminal Court for weapons and coercion charges.
On March 27 a Manhattan jury convicted Remy of first-degree assault, criminal weapons charges and attempted coercion, for shooting her former friend, Makeda Barnes-Jospeh, in the abdomen last July.
The two were in a dispute over the rapper’s missing $3,000 that Remy accused the victim of stealing. Remy (born Reminisce Smith) was initially scheduled to be sentenced on April 23, however, Judge Rena Uviller postponed the trial until today, granting the Grammy nominated rapper’s attorney, Ivan Fisher, additional time to properly prepare for the date.
Today, Remy wept as she pleaded to the judge. “I stand here today as Remy Mackie,” she said with tears in her eyes, referring to Papoose’s last name. “I’m a loving wife, mother and loving daughter and loving sister to my brothers and sisters.”Remy also addressed Barnes-Joseph. “I apologize for not saving you from your physical and mental scars. Before delivering the sentence of 8 years – 5 for weapons and 3 for coercion charges to run concurrently – the judge gave a statement.
“I’ve learned Remy is an intelligent and charitable young woman,” the judge said. “She’s overcome a difficult childhood. Her music has inspired people in need. She’s loved and has support from her family.”
After the complementary remarks, the judge turned her remarks to accountability.
“This is somewhat of a pattern. This is not the first time she has been engaged in a violent act. She never took responsibility for her actions. This has nothing to do with rap it’s about the actions of one person. Remy is an extremely angry young woman who feels the rules do not apply to her.”
After the sentencing, Papoose got into a shoving match with a court officer. “All y’all want is f*cking money,” he yelled. “This is bullsh*t. Remy is innocent.”
Remy’s mother and others, who had painted Remy on their faces in red, had to restrain Pap.
Remy and her fiancé Papoose were scheduled to wed at Rikers Island yesterday, but after Pap allegedly attempted to smuggle a handcuff key into the jail the ceremony was called off. I guess we will see her in 2016.
