Bun B says he is not gonna Retire

UGK’s Bun B recently talked about not wanting to retire and why stepping away from music seems unlikely as artists such as LL Cool J and Jay-Z are rapping into their 40′s.

From the 37 year-old rapper’s perspective, he still feels like a youthful solo emcee.

“I don’t know, because my solo career is still dawning,” he explained. “I look at the [LL] Cool J’s out there and the Hov’s, and they got the 10-albums-and-running type of situation. And people like Short Dog, who I think is on album 20 by now. So as a solo artist, I’m still kind of young in this game, but I have made some major steps. So maybe we’ll call me a late prodigy on the solo side. But we had some good moments.”

Bun B Defends Drake for being able to sing a little

UGK’s Bun B recently defended Drake against critics who have cited the rapper’s ability to sing as a negative feature.

Bun believes Drake’s ability to rap and sing is a gift, not a curse.

“I don’t know what they are talking about personally because if you are saying that then that means you are trying to say that people like T.J. Swan, Slick Rick and Biz Markie are not hip-hop. Come on… all of those guys sung on their songs. Singing in hip-hop is nothing new. We’ve always had people that incorporated singing in their raps. And believe me, if MC’s could sing, they wouldn’t get singers to sing on their albums.”

Recently, Drake said rapping was his best feature.

“I could never really take singing on the road the way I can take rapping on the road. I can’t get on stage and blow people away with my range and vocals. I’m a studio singer because I can convey emotion and I have unique melodies, so that’s kind of what I pride myself on, but that’s where it stops. I make music more for people to listen to rather than to hold me as an R&B artist. Not to wish that I couldn’t sing better. If I could sing like Trey Songz then yeah, I’d definitely just want to be a singer. If I could do anything, trust me, I wish I could just sit at the piano and sing.”

Bun B talks about his new Album

Carrying the Trill torch high, Houston rapper Bun B is readying his third solo released on Rap-A-Lot Records called Trill OG, which is set to be release on August 3rd via Fontana/Universal Records.

“We have been working on it the past few months, it’s a strong project, one of the strongest albums I have ever been a part of,”. “I think it brings the foundation of hip hop to the forefront, with the kind of rhyming and kind of music and the type of vibe and feeling that I’m building to.”

The album will also feature the rhymes of Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Yo Gotti, Slim Thug and production from Play-N-Skillz, Boi-1da, Drumma Boi and Steve Below.

“A lot of the production is done by Steve Below, who was a prodigy of Pimp C, he worked under Pimp C for a long time,”. “J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League is on the album, DJ B-Do. Just a lot of different people in the game, some up and coming talent as well,” Bun B told said. “Then as far as features of course Pimp C, Drake, and Tupac, are all on the album.”

In addition to discussing his up and coming project. Bun B also spoke both candidly and modestly about the UGK legacy and the group’s place in hip-hop history.

“Well its difficult for me to sit here and talk about me and to talk about history and to blow my own horn, but UGK as a group, as well as a movement has definitely made a lot of contributions, to not just to southern rap, but to rap music and hip hop in general,” Bun B explained.

“We have gone out here from city to city, standing tall, repping for the Trill, and people respected it because we showed nothing but love and respect city to city, and people showed love back to us,” Bun B. stated.
